Shaped Springs
Shaped springs, formed
to the space you have.
When a round coil will not fit, the spring is formed to the geometry the assembly allows — bent legs, offset coils, non-circular bodies or several working sections in one part. Made to drawing in Rayong, Thailand, from 0.08 mm to 8.0 mm wire.

Geometry first, then load
Most springs are a helix with two ends. A shaped spring starts from the space instead: the coil, the legs and the contact points are placed where the assembly needs them, and the wire is chosen to deliver the force from that geometry.
That makes the drawing the most important input. We review the form and the load together, agree the forming route, then build samples and check them at the working positions before production.
- Wire diameters from 0.08 mm to 8.0 mm in current production
- Bent legs, offset coils and multi-section forms
- Carbon spring steel and stainless steel grades
- Prototype, pre-production and volume orders
Where a standard coil will not fit
Shaped springs appear where the assembly has an awkward cavity, needs two forces from one part, or has to be located by the spring itself. The form takes over part of the function that a housing would otherwise do.
Shaped spring specifications
Current production is shown below. Any form outside these parameters is reviewed at RFQ rather than assumed.
| Parameter | Capability |
|---|---|
| Wire diameter | 0.08–8.0 mm in current production. Planned expansion to 12.0 mm as new equipment is installed. |
| Materials | 65Mn, 72A, 82B, 60Si2Mn; stainless steel 301, 302, 304 and 316. Other grades reviewed on request. |
| Form | Defined by the drawing: bent legs, offset or non-circular coils, multiple working sections, locating features. |
| Load | Measured at the working position or positions stated on the drawing. |
| Heat treatment | In-house stress relief and tempering. |
| Surface finish | Anti-rust oil, electrophoresis (E-coat), zinc plating, nickel plating, spray coating. |
| Wire tolerance | JIS wire tolerance by grade (JIS G 3521, JIS G 3522 or JIS G 4309). ASTM wire specification and SMI commercial tolerances available for US programs. |
| Dimensional inspection | 2.5D vision measurement and dimensional checks against the drawing. |
| Fatigue and corrosion | Fatigue testing and salt spray testing available, agreed at RFQ. |
| Quality system | ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015. |
| Samples | Prototype and pre-production samples against drawing. |
For shaped parts, please mark the functional surfaces and the working position on the drawing. Those are the dimensions we inspect and the points at which load is checked.
Materials and finishes
Shaped parts often combine a tight bend with a fatigue load, so the wire grade and the finish are chosen together.
65Mn · 72A · 82B · 60Si2Mn
Selected for strength and fatigue performance at a lower material cost, normally with a plated or coated finish for corrosion protection.
301 · 302 · 304 · 316
Used where the part sees moisture, cleaning or a corrosive environment, and where the bend radii suit the grade.
Oil · E-coat · zinc · nickel · spray
Anti-rust oil, electrophoresis, zinc plating, nickel plating and spray coating are available. Where bends are tight, the finish is reviewed with the forming route at RFQ.
Checked on the features that matter
A shaped part has many dimensions but only a few that decide whether it works. Those are the ones inspected and recorded.
- Raw material tensile strength and metallographic structure
- Load checks at the working position or positions
- 2.5D vision measurement of critical features
- Salt spray testing for plated and coated parts
- Fatigue testing for cycle-life validation
- Inspection records agreed at RFQ

What to send with your drawing
For shaped springs, the drawing carries the whole design. The more of the function it describes, the fewer questions come back.
- Wire diameter and material grade
- Formed geometry, bend radii and leg positions
- Working position and orientation in the assembly
- Force required at that position
- Surface finish and operating environment
- Annual quantity and delivery schedule

Shaped spring questions
What counts as a shaped spring?
Any spring whose form is defined by the assembly rather than by a round helix: bent legs, offset or non-circular coils, several working sections in one part, or a spring that also locates itself in the housing.
Can you work from a sample instead of a drawing?
A sample helps, but we quote against a drawing. If you only have a sample, we confirm the defining dimensions and functional surfaces with you first, so both sides are quoting the same part.
How is a shaped part validated?
Samples are produced against the drawing, then the critical form features and the load at the working position are checked. Volume production repeats those checks under the inspection plan agreed at RFQ.
Can you supply samples before production?
Yes. We produce prototype and pre-production samples against the drawing, then validate the part before volume production.
